Project Workshops

Socks; Toe up or Top down? Both!

Three Sundays: Sept 10th (1:30-4:30), Oct 1st (1:30-4:300, & Oct 15th (1:30-3:30)

Instructor:  Elena Homans

Have you ever wanted to join the craze of knitting socks? Knitting socks toe up or top down? What to choose? So many questions … How about learning both concepts of sock knitting in the same workshop? What makes it particularly easy and so popular nowadays is the Fish Lips Kiss Heel that works equally well whether you knit your socks top down or toe up. It’s so simple that once you have knit your first heel, you’ll be able to toss the entire pattern aside and knit fabulous looking and fitting socks hereafter, and for any foot (not just your own!). We will teach you everything you need to know to knit socks - from working in the round to shaping the toe and turning the heel. You will knit your first pair (or even two) of real sized adult socks with a fingering weight yarn. Speaking of Christmas …  You know it’s coming… Hand knit socks make a wonderful gift too.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN: socks: toe up and /or top down, Judy’s Magic Cast on, knitting in the round using Magic Loop, twin stitches (variation of the short rows), Fish Lips Kiss heel, Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind off, Kitchener stitch; how to make your toe-up and top-down socks fit perfectly.

PREREQUISITES: student must be very comfortable with cast on, knit and purl.

*plus materials and Yarn del Sol yarns for the project.

3 Saturdays: September 9th - 1:00-4:00PM, September 30th – 1:00-4:00PM & October 14th - 1:00-3:00PM.  $65.00*

Instructor:  Elena Homans

more than one way you can knit a sweater. Tegna is knitted seamlessly from the bottom up, starting with the slightly flared lace hem, then working up to the armholes, where you separate your work and work the front and back flat. The lace and over-sized fit are a match made in heaven.
Knit in fingering weight yarn at a very loose gauge, with approximately 5-10” of positive ease, results in an easy to wear year-round garment. You can customize the body and sleeve lengths to your preference.  Tegna top is so simple yet so elegant.

There is homework to be completed prior to the 1st session of this workshop. So, please be sure to sign up in advance.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN: bottom up seamless sweater construction, reading charts, picking up stitches, twin stitches (variation of the short rows), invisible joining of a new ball of yarn, blending skeins of a hand-dyed yarn, 3-needle bind off.

PREREQUISITES:  Confident knitting & purling, knitting in the round, yarnover, simple increases & decreases.
